That's the premise behind romantic comedy They're Playing Our Song scheduled to appear on stage at The Queanbeyan Performing Art Centre on March 28.
The story is based on the real-life relationship of the show's creators Marvin Hamlisch and Carole Bayer Sager.
Central to the plot is the dynamic between Vernon and Sonia as they try to navigate their work and romantic relationship.
When it comes to making music, they are a match made in heaven. But the big question is, is their relationship doomed or will love strike the right note?
Actor Scott Irwin who plays Vernon in the show has a little bit of experience in having his work and love life cross over. He previously played the part of Vernon alongside his wife Danielle Barnes in a previous tour of They're Playing Our Song.
He will play opposite Teagan Wouters in this tour of the show.
"Working with my wife was a fantastic experience. It was a case of life imitating art imitating life. We had a great time but she wasn't available to play the part this time," he said.
"Acting the part with Teagan has been very different. It's a total reinvention of the role for me and you show a different side of yourself."
Irwin described Vernon as neurotic, aloof and focused. Although the character of Vernon is not exactly a barrel of laughs, he was a fun character to play, Irwin said.
"Vernon is very successful but is a highly strung, overachieving composer," Irwin said. "He is very different to me but playing those extreme character traits is a lot of fun.
"This is an extreme comedy in that the characters are not ones that naturally sit together. They're the two mostly unlikely people to work let alone live together.
"It's a very snappy comedy with some great music. There's a lot of love songs, beautiful ballads and plenty of fast paced catchy tunes."
