Local firefighters head for Victoria

LOCAL firefighters headed south to Victoria at the weekend to join the fight against the worst bushfire conditions since the devastating ‘Black Saturday’ fires.

Three tankers and 18 firefighters from the Lake George Zone Rural Fire Service left for Orbost in the Gippsland region on Saturday for a voluntary, five-day assignment.

Lake George Zone Superintendent Tim Carroll said they’d be helping wherever they were required to assist the Victorian emergency services.

“They got down there Saturday afternoon and have been involved in property protection and generally helping the Victorian firefighting effort in Gippsland,” Superintendent Carroll said.

“We made a request for people who were available. And they’re away on a five-day commitment- that’s three days of firefighting and two days of travel, and they’ll go wherever they’re required.”

The local firefighters will return home on Wednesday afternoon.
