Lake George Zone Rural Fire Service (RFS) Superintendent Tim Carroll said around 30 firefighters from the ACT and NSW RFS responded to the fire, located approximately five kilometres east of Queanbeyan on the fringe of Kowen Forest.
“The fire is now contained. We’re now blacking out and mopping up,” Mr Carroll said.
“Crews from NSW and the ACT, with the assistance of helicopters were able to bring the fire under control.
“The fire’s under investigation. We don’t know what the cause is yet, but we’re looking into it,” he said.
The fire started just after 2pm today and spread quickly along the railway line between the ACT border and the Kings Highway.
Flames licked the back of local man Rhuben Colverwell's 'Burbong' property, however family members quickly attended the scene and moved horses to safety. No horses had been harmed in the blaze, they said.
