QUEANBEYAN East Public School teacher Kristen Campbell said the best thing about winning the Member for Monaro Excellence in Education Award was seeing her students' reactions.
"It was very special, it is a very special award. It does mean a lot, to be honest the best part was bringing it back to the classroom and having all the kids congratulating me," she said.
"It is nice to be recognised, but a lot of people put in a lot of time. It's more than just english, maths and holidays, [teaching] is not about that."
Mrs Campbell, whose husband is also a teacher, has been teaching at Queanbeyan East Public School for the past six years.
She is also the assistant principal for years three to five.
"I've always wanted to be a teacher, it was the only way for me to go. I've loved it ever since I've started," she said.
"Teaching the kids and watching them learn something is amazing but it's also about making a contribution to society."
The award, presented by Member for Monaro John Barilaro late last year, acknowledged the important contributions that teachers or school staff make through their work.
"Kristen ensures every student is engaged, challenged and provided with learning opportunities to ensure their success," Mr Barilaro said.
"Kristen has outstanding interpersonal and leadership skills which are underpinned by principles of fairness, compassion and integrity."
