Qbn crowned champion club

QUEANBEYAN YMCA Rhythmic Gymnastics head coach Peta Virgo says a number of the club’s junior members will be in contention for state selection at this year’s NSW State Trials in October.

Virgo’s comments came after the club’s impressive performance at last week’s NSW Country Championships where Queanbeyan claimed the titles of Rhythmic Champion Club and Overall Country Champion.

Queanbeyan dominated in the championship’s rhythmic categories, clean sweeping several divisions to secure back-to-back trophies in the discipline.

And Virgo said the club would now turn its attentions to qualifying gymnasts for the NSW state team to compete at the Australian Championships.

“The majority of our juniors gained qualification scores for State Trials [at the Country Championships] so now the task is taking them up to Sydney and competing against the bigger clubs up there,” she said.

“Definitely there are a few girls though who have a shot. They’ll all be on a high [after last week] so hopefully they can carry on from there.”

Queanbeyan claimed numerous individual medals at last week’s Country Championships while taking out the team awards in junior’s level one, two, four and five and senior’s level two, three and six.

While the club has previously claimed the title of Rhythmic Champion Club, this year marks the first time Queanbeyan has been proclaimed Overall Country Champions.

In an impressive show of strength, Queanbeyan amassed a haul of 43 gold medals over the three days of competition including 26 individual, 11 category and six team gold.

The NSW state trials will be held on October 6 and 7. For complete NSW Country results, see the current edition of The Queanbeyan Age.
