Lazaro says no to Yowies in 2012

Waratah Championship League, round 2

Who: Queanbeyan Yowies v Bathurst Goldminers

Where: Queanbeyan Basketball Centre

When: Sunday, 12pm

THE Queanbeyan Yowies have suffered a blow with former Canberrra Nationals representative Jono Lazaro opting not to turn out for the club this season.

Lazaro will instead play for Goulburn in the Waratah Youth League this year, robbing the club of one of its 2010 grand final stars. A former ACT under-20s representative, Lazaro was courtside for the Yowies opening game of the season against Wagga Wagga three weeks ago.

But he said having one last run in the under-23 division was too tempting an opportunity to pass up.

‘‘This is my last year where I will be eligible to compete in the Youth League so I thought why not? Queanbeyan don’t have a Youth League team so I decided I’d have a bit of fun this year with Goulburn instead,’’ Lazaro said.

Lazaro was a member of the successful Queanbeyan Roadrunners side in the ACT competition in 2008 and 2009 before playing a major role in the Yowies run to the 2010 Waratah League grand final.

The Yowies will meet the Bathurst Goldminers on Sunday as the side goes in search of its first win of the season.

After hurriedly assembling a scratch outfit for the side’s round one loss to Wagga Wagga, Queanbeyan will be looking for a more assured performance this weekend.

The match will be part of a big doubleheader at the Queanbeyan Basketball Centre with the game to follow on from the Yowies women’s match against Bathurst.
