QRACING administrator Brendan Comyn confirmed betting turnover almost equalled that of Queanbeyan Cup day with the club to reap a substantial financial windfall.
It comes as welcome news for QRACING which has experienced a series of underwhelming financial returns from meetings so far this year.
Comyn said the club likely benefited from strong entries on the day combined with weak fields at Gosford in posting the strong result.
“Financially, [Thursday] was right up there with Cup day,” Comyn said. “And considering we were giving away a lot less in prize money, we’ll make a lot more money out of it.
And Queanbeyan’s trainers were just as successful on the day with five of the program’s seven races taken out by locals.
Frank Cleary had two winners with God’s Reward and Punton Sully while Jenny Hoy’s Opoho took out the Benchmark 55 Handicap (1100m) and Mick Smith’s Dure claimed the Class 1 & Maiden Plate.
The Garry Clarke trained Oh So Adorable, meanwhile, extended its run to five wins from six starts after coming home over the top of Nick Olive’s Rose of Fulverton in the $20,000 Queanbeyan Quickie.
Thursday’s meeting was the first of three race days at the Queanbeyan track this month as the club enjoys its busiest period of the year.
Queanbeyan will race again next Monday before the club’s Boxing Day meet rounds out the year.
