The race is identical in class and distance to that which produced Dure’s first win at his home track last Thursday.

The impressive victory was Dure’s first win from five starts with the gelding clearly benefiting from the softer track conditions to finish three lengths ahead of the Neville Layt trained duo Predicted and Strada Time.

“We may as well try going back to the well,” Smith said of his decision to nominate the gelding for a repeat performance on Monday.  

“He’s bred for a bit more ground but the mile is starting to get up to what he’s bred for and he seemed to do quite well over the distance last start.

“It’d be nice to see if we can win two races in a row with him. That’d be something quite rare for me,” Smith added with a laugh.

Dure is a half-brother to multiple race winning stablemates Jimmy Recard and Street Spirit out of Revive.

He’s also the son of champion sire Dubawi who has produced Group 1 winners in both Australia and Europe in recent years.

And while he has had a solid if unspectacular start to his career, Dure’s record of one win from five starts does compare favourably to his two older siblings.

 “The two other foals we had from the same mare in Street Spirit and Jimmy Recard both had 10 or 12 starts before they had a win so they seem to be a slow maturing family,” Smith said.

“At one stage though I did think [Dure] might be the best of the three so hopefully he might still prove the City winner of the bunch.”

Following Monday’s meeting, Smith said he would likely aim Dure at the Nooroma Cup on Monday, January 6.

Monday’s racing will be Queanbeyan Racing Club’s penultimate meet of the year ahead of the club’s traditionally popular Boxing Day races.
