Queanbeyan's ghostly past will be revealed as part of Nichole Overall's new Mysterious Queanbeyan by Moonlight tours.
Former journalist and author of a recent book that delves into Queanbeyan's rich history, City of Champions, Mrs Overall plans to expose the city's past with a unique style.
Rather than confining research and facts gathered for her latest book, Mrs Overall decided to form her own business venture, now running tour guides with a spooky twist.
"There was such a wealth of information that the research (from City of Champions) had uncovered, and the myths, mysteries and legends chapter in particular has been the one that people seem to really have enjoyed," Mrs Overall said.
"As well as talking about some of these unusual, quirky, spooky stories, it will also allow the opportunity to give it a historical basis," she said.
The tours focuses on destinations along the Queanbeyan River and the many stories associated with it.
"When you take it back to the very beginning, it was by the side of that river that the original explorers first rested, where the first ex-convict Timothy Beard made his settlement in 1828, and it was such an integral part of the early economy," she said.
Mysterious sightings of unknown creatures in the River, and crimes and tragedies that have occurred will also be explained.
For instance the number of drownings that have occurred, including the tales of heroism of people who have drowned attempting to save other people.
The tours are inclusive of all ages, Mrs Overall said.
"My two young sons are also insisting on helping me in the endeavour, and it is fantastic knowing I am appealing to that younger market, to be able to explore the city that they were born in."
Besides tourists, locals are also encouraged to learn more about their city, even if they consider themselves knowledgeable of the area.
"I'm not really a local- I've only lived here for 25 years!" Mrs Overall said.
As a two-hour walking tour, Mysterious Queanbeyan by Moonlight will also target the Queanbeyan's CBD.
"Given that some of our oldest and most interesting buildings are located here in the CBD along the River which had some fascinating stories, it was a smart choice to do it that way," Mrs Overall said.
The inaugural tour was launched on Halloween, with the next one scheduled for the first full moon on November 15.
The tours are planned to run on an ongoing basis, depending on demand and interest.
