THE final result in the race for Eden-Monaro between Labor incumbent Mike Kelly and Liberal challenger Peter Hendy may not be known until September 20.
The Australian Electoral Commission confirmed this morning a recount of all votes cast on election day will be carried out today (Monday, September 11) before counting of the thousands of pre-poll and postal votes begins.
The AEC said final results from the pre-poll and postal vote count won’t be confirmed until 13 days after election day.
Mr Hendy currently holds a razor thin 386 vote lead out of more than 80,000 votes already counted.
Dr Kelly, however, will be hoping for a strong result from pre-polls which broke heavily in his favour in 2010.
The junior Labor minister won more than 60 per cent of the pre-poll vote at the last federal election in his race against the Liberals’ David Gazard.
Mr Hendy however, has previously expressed confidence that the pre-poll and postal vote count will break in his favour.
Results from 81 of Eden-Monaro’s 84 booths have so far been counted on a two-party preferred basis.
