QUEANBEYAN Kangaroos under-18s coach Jack Giddings says the club must aim to step up to division one next season despite last weekend’s grand final defeat.
The Kangaroos fell 24-16 to the Gungahlin Bulls in last Sunday’s division two decider with the loss denying the club what would have been an historic clean sweep of all three senior grades.
The loss was a bitter pill to swallow for the Kangaroos who had defeated the same opponents just a fortnight prior in the semi-finals.
But Giddings said the defeat should not put a dampener on the club’s hopes of moving up to the top grade in 2014.
“I’m pretty sure this side will be in division one next year,” he said. “That has to be the aim for the club.
“Eleven players in this side are eligible to play again next year and four of the club’s under-16s squad are with the [Canberra] Raiders at the moment.
“With both the under-18s and the under-16s making the grand final this year it augurs well for the club. They’ll be able to put together a pretty strong squad for the 18s next season.”
