After 80 minutes of football there was nothing to separate the two sides on the biggest stage in local sport with the scores locked at 16-16.
But Kangaroos five-eighth and man of the match Jordan Macey then stepped up, slotting a field goal in the opening minute of extra-time that would eventually prove the difference.
Earlier, the Kangaroos shocked the Blues running out to a 10-0 advantage inside the opening 10 minutes thanks to tries from Daniel Watt and second rower Jed Pearce.
Rocked out of their sleepy start, the Blues soon hit back however, levelling the scores through tries to Levi Freeman and hooker Josh Chudleigh as the points came thick and fast.
The Blues then went in front for the first time in the match when replacement forward Aidan Woods crashed over from close range with the pre-match favourites taking a 16-10 lead into half-time.
In warm conditions, the two sides dropped away in the second half with both outfits struggling to complete their sets.
But with 20 minutes to play a piece of individual brilliance from Kangaroos winger Fonua Tonga brought the game and the healthy crowd to life.
From 40 metres out, Tonga went on a charging run down the left-hand touchline with the Blues helpless to stop the big man from crossing out wide.
While Kangaroos skipper Troy Whiley missed the conversion from wide out, he made amends with eight minutes to play, landing a penalty goal to level the scores.
Neither side then proved able to break the deadlock in regular time before Macey's drop goal heroics sealed a stunning victory.
