AN ELDERLY woman has died at the scene of a collision at the intersection of Monaro and Crawford Street, Queanbeyan Police has confirmed.
Acting inspector Nick Hallett said police were currently investigating the cause of the accident.
“An elderly female was crossing Monaro Street about 1pm, it seems the cement truck moved forward and there was a collision,” he said.
“She was pronounced deceased at the scene…we know the lady was over 70 years of age.”
Two lanes of Monaro St, between Collett and Crawford St, are estimated to be closed for another two to three hours as police continue their investigations. Diversions have been put in place.
“We still have a number of witnesses who were in Monaro St at the time to talk to and work out what happened,” Hallett said.
“We need to examine the crime scene and examine the truck.”
The driver of the truck was taken to Queanbeyan Hospital for blood and urine testing.
“This is mandatory, there is nothing suggest alcohol or drugs were involved,” Hallett said.
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident and who has not yet spoken to investigators.
