WITH one team having a bye, round 12 saw the Tigers under-8s play the Tuggeranong Lions at Kambah.
After a slow start on a slightly larger field the boys warmed up well and showed their skills in the middle by winning the majority of ruck contests.
The amount of hand passing and kicking to team mates was really pleasing to see and everybody was determined to get involved. The back line marked their opponents closely and repelled every attack.
The team looked very professional, displaying a high level of teamwork that allowed every player to make the most of their opportunities. There were a lot of goals scored entertaining the parents at the ground.
Our next game is down south at Gordon.
Thanks to our awards sponsors the Sportsmans Warehouse and Karabar Network Video, the awards for this week went to: Oscar Hoyer, Riley Hoyer, Harvey McAlister, Jack Ramage and Zak Shelton.
The Strip Pizza and Pasta Bar under-9s
QUEANBEYAN’S under-9s travelled to Kambah to play the Lions Blue and Red teams for their round 12 matches.
There were goals aplenty, with accurate kicking, hard work chasing the ball and players breaking into space resulting in lots of scoring opportunities for both teams.
Coaches praised the Tigers’ midfield effort for stopping possession from entering the defensive third. It was clear to spectators how much all players have improved over the season and this round really showcased some fantastic footy skills.
This week’s awards went to Noah Imrie and Adam Stortini (Tigers Canteen Award), Blake Faunce and Fraser McClure (Karabar Network Video) and Bailee Gilbert, Bailey Rudd, Joel Ogden, Thomas Percy, Taylor Gauci and Will Aitchison (Sportsmans Warehouse).
The Biajag Constructions Tigers under-10s Black
THE Tigers under-10s Black side played host to Ainslie Red on a great day for footy.
From the first bounce we dominated possession in what was one of our best team performances for the season.
Although we were one player down for the game we worked hard as a team to move the ball into our forward line creating many shots on goal, with many great six pointers.
Our ability to be first to the ball was outstanding, along with our running with the ball and looking for a team mate running into space.
Again our tackling pressure created many turnovers which was pleasing to see.
This week’s awards went to Jack Armstrong, Jordan Gilbert and Jarrod Barker.
The Canberra Truck Align Tigers under-11s Black
THE Tigers under-11s Black side met a formidable Magpies outfit on a beautiful day for football last Saturday.
Strengthened by the return of dynamic on-baller Connor Williams and quality ruckman Brad Rauter, the mighty Tigers fancied their chances against the all-powerful black and white machine.
What eventuated however was a really high quality first-quarter display from the Magpies with five unanswered goals against a fragile and at times brittle defence. A stern message at quarter time resulted in 3 quarters of very competitive and tightly contested football.
The Tigers to a man fought for every possession and gradually fought their way back into match, albeit not on the scoreboard but around the packs and through the middle.
In all a valuable lesson for the Tigers as the quality of the opposition and how they worked as a unit selflessly really rammed home to the local lads.
After the match you could see a bit of disappointment but also the realization that hard work and effort can be rewarded if you persevere and work together, something the last half of footy showed.
Final score was Tigers 3-4-22 to Magpies 11-5-71. For the Tigers Sam Frost kicked two goals whilst pocket rocket Pat McGrath kicked his first goal of the year.
Award Winners were: Pat McGrath (Tigers Canteen Award), Connor Williams and Deekon Parsons (Sportsmans Warehouse Award) and Gerry Dwyer (Karabar Network Video Award).
Queanbeyan Tigers Baker Deane and Nutt under-11s Gold
THE Tigers under-11s Gold side took on the highly fancied Calwell Swans at their home ground, Halloran Oval, Jerrabomberra.
The first quarter was an even affair but unfortunately the Swans were able to kick two late goals.
Riley Thompson at ruck and Leo Palombi roving combined beautifully several times at the clearances and Dean Shea was working hard across half back.
Unfortunately the Tigers lost their way in the second quarter letting the ball out of the forward line too easily and falling into their old habit of playing the man and not the ball.
To be fair to the young Tigers, the bounce of the ball was not going their way with two of the Swans’ four goals resulting from “leg break” bounces.
The back line worked over time with Leo Tuckfield mopping up everything that came his way and Caleb Downes and Lachlan Silsby working well together to try and stem the flow.
At half-time the team decided to start the second half afresh, and to their credit, came out and matched the Swans kick for kick, restricting them to one goal for the term.
Jack Reed produced his best game of the season picking up numerous possessions on the wing whilst Stephan Ficovic and Jacob Steen’s strong tackling was starting to create opportunities around the contests.
As usual, Josh Ryder was winning the hard ball and the talented Jarrod Barker was working his way into the game.
Despite playing the last quarter one player short due to injury, this was the Tigers best quarter. Chris Page, Hunter Robinson and James Clement had to work overtime in the under manned forward line, whilst Oliver Williams was providing plenty of drive from the wing.
The Tigers held the Swans goalless in this term whilst adding their only goal for the game through Jarrod Barker. The final score was, Swans 6.7.49 to Tigers 1.0.6.
Award Winners were Dean Shea and Jack Reed (Sportsmans Warehouse Award).
Mr Brand Man under-12s
In beautiful conditions (if you forget the wind), theTigers under-12s took on the might of the Calwell Swans.
The well drilled young Tigers made their coach, Kane and assistant coach, Andrew, proud as they ran the Swans all around the park executing their training drills to perfection.
Nathan Corbett and Caleb Cawse ran all day and were simply too quick for their opponents, Bradley Pender performed brilliantly in the ruck and Hugh Clark was outstanding in defence.
Tom Cantwell has been a welcome return from injury and Lexi Silsby went on a run and kick fest.
Clancy, Duane, Noah, Lachlan, Charlie, Angus, Harrison, Liam, Nick and Harry all provided amazing support with their continual running and strong defence.
Huge thanks to Trent Buchanan, Jack Nisbett, Jack Ross, Jamie “Muscles” Edwards and Harry Grant who once again lifted the team with their skills, knowledge and experience. Well played.
The team are enjoying their footy and playing with wonderful sportsmanship which is what it is all about. Your parents are proud of all of you and the way you all play together as a team.
Our Award winners were: Nathan Corbett (MoM), Tom Cantwell (Sportsmans Warehouse), Charlie Duncan (Karabar Network Video and Hugh Clark (Tigers Canteen Award).
Officeworks under-17s
THE Queanbeyan Tigers under 17’s travelled to Batemans Bay to play in an exhibition match on Saturday against the for newly formed Batemans Bay Seahawks.
It was good see that the coast kids that play for us each week chose to pull on a Tigers jumper and were proud to do so.
As numbers were short on both teams, players were divided into two sides of 14. The boys played a great, fast moving game on a very warm morning.
This was a great opportunity for the coast kids to show off their skills and the day was a big success; with a great game of footy played hard and fair.
A big thanks to all those that travelled and to the boys for showing us again that they are such great sports. Thanks also to the Batemans Bay Seahawks club who looked after us on the day.
Also thanks to Josh Bryce and Kate from ACT AFL for a great day.
