IT'S not the first thing that pops into your mind when you thing of town amenities, but Queanbeyan is spoilt for choice when it comes to access to light industrial areas and services.
We've got the Yass Road district at one end, Gilmore Road at the other, and are only five minutes from Fyshwick and Hume.
That proximity to Queanbeyan, and particularly Jerrabomberra is what John Thompson is banking on with his new tyre repair venture in Hume, Johnno's Tyres.
Mr Thompson spent 15 years running Tyrepower in Tuggeranong, before increasing costs and a down turn in revenue during the Global Financial Crisis forced him out.
He's now the only tyre shop in the Hume district, within spitting distance of Jerrabomberra and, eventually, South Tralee. Plus rent is now only $500 per week, compared to $2000 in Tuggeranong. The new business opened in July, and Mr Thompson said it was growing steadily.
"There's currently no tyre shop out here and the plan is that the whole area is going to grow as Tralee takes off.
"And Jerra's really close so it will save people going into Queanbeyan or Fyshwick, plus a lot of Jerra people work here in Hume as well so I'm hoping to get that market," he said.
Johnno's Tyres fits new tyres and does repairs as well as wheel balancing. Mr Thompson works weekends for clients who get stranded with tyre issues, and also has a mobile eftpos unit, so he can drive clients' cars back to their workplace or homes and they can pay him then and there.
"My motto is 'Don't get caught bald.' Everyone talks about grip and mileage (as reasons to replace your tyres) but if you're getting around on bald tyres it gets very expensive very fast with fines," he said.
"Plus I'm bald, so you've got to be able to laugh at yourself."
He's also a member of the Canberra Hotrod Association and the proud owner of a hotted-up 1933 Ford. Servicing the cars of fellow hotrodders, and also people who used his services in Tuggeranong for many years has provided a handy kick start for his new business.
"This is a bit different to working out in Tuggeranong because there's still not much here. But I came out here expecting to average between $500 and $1000 in the initial weeks, and we're already average $2100.
"It's nice that when you've been doing it for such a long time people come out to support you," he said.
