SOME of the finest artists from the Queanbeyan and Canberra region will be on display over the next two days at the Queanbeyan Public School Community Art Show.
The exhibition, which proved hugely popular following its inception in 2011, is returning for the first time in two years.
The biannual event serves as a major fundraiser for the school with the 2011 event raising about $10,000 through ticket sales and commissions.
School artistic coordinator Melinda Hayward has been involved in putting together both exhibitions and said she was expecting plenty of high quality pieces to be on show this year.
“Last time we had some amazing pieces of artwork on show from abstracts to natural water colours, the pieces were just beautiful,” she said. “Based on that and also on the quality of the artists who will be exhibiting this year, I’d expect the pieces to be just as good if not better this time around.”
And Hayward said this year’s event tied in perfectly with the city’s 175th birthday celebrations.
“As an event it’s really going to help celebrate Queanbeyan’s 175th birthday and feature a lot of Queanbeyan themed works to that’s going to be really special this year,” she said.
“Our guest artist Jenny Sheppard from Jerrabomberra has done 14 pieces for the exhibition all of which are based on Queanbeyan’s 175th anniversary.
“There’s a view from the Byrnes Mill, there’s a couple of works of the river and one of the regatta as well so she’s really highlighted Queanbeyan in these works.”
The exhibition will also feature more than 600 works produced by the school’s own students.
“I’d say we’ve definitely got a few of our own little artistic talents here at the school and hopefully this will encourage them and allow them to feel like what it’s like to be part of an exhibition,” Hayward said.
