QUEANBEYAN Netball’s Kylie Maxwell has
hailed last weekend’s representative carnival as a major success.
For the Age's photo gallery of last Sunday's Queanbeyan Netball Junior Representative Carnival, see above.
The carnival, which attracted 45
representative teams from across regional NSW, Queanbeyan and Canberra and saw
more than 700 players, coaches, officials and spectators crowding the Thornton
Road Netball Courts.
Sunday’s tournament marked the first time
in 15 years Queanbeyan has hosted a junior representative carnival and Maxwell
said the experience had been overwhelming positive.
“Considering we had more than 170 games
played on the day it was a bit of a shuffle to fit everyone in but everything
went very smoothly and we received a lot of positive feedback,” she said.
“All of the other associations involved
were very happy with how things went and there was just a great buzz up at the
courts on the day.
“It was a great way to highlight netball in
Queanbeyan and we’ll definitely be looking to do it again next year.”
The carnival marked the start of the NSW
junior representative season which will now build toward the State Age
Championships in Sydney in June/July.
Queanbeyan teams in general performed
strongly at the event with the association’s under-11s and under-14s outfits
finishing runners up in their respective age grades.
Maxwell highlighted the effort of the
under-11s as a particularly encouraging sign with this year marking the first
time in a number of years Queanbeyan has fielded such a young development side.
“All the other teams had been training
prior to Christmas and then again over the past month where the under-11s only
got together about three weeks ago,” she said.
“For them to finish as runners up after
only having about five training sessions together, that was a really great achievement.”
Queanbeyan’s representative program will
now shift focus to the next major carnival to be held in Penrith later this
month.
