About 8:05pm, Thursday 21 February 2013, a man was driving his Honda Accord west along Bungendore Road when the vehicle left the road and struck a sign.
The Honda continued on and crashed into a tree with the force of the impact tearing the car in half.
A 32-year-old man, who was the sole occupant of the Honda, was ejected from the vehicle and landed on the verge.
He sustained serious injuries including a severed leg, a partially severed arm and a broken pelvis.
The man was taken by ambulance to hospital in Canberra where he is undergoing emergency surgery and remains in a serious condition.
Police from Monaro Local Area Command attended the scene and established a crime scene which was examined by specialist forensic officers.
The Honda has been seized by police for mechanical examination and investigations into the cause of the crash are continuing.
