Queanbeyan Rural Fire Service is reporting at least one woman had to be rescued from her car on Lanyon Drive.
Queanbeyan SES has received 65 requests for assistance with flash flooding, trees down/threatening and leaky roofs across Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra.
Parts of Monaro Street and Crawford Street meanwhile, were blocked off by police for about half an hour around 7.30pm this evening as minor flooding left parked cars submerged up to their bumpers.
The Bureau of Meteorology however, has cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning for Canberra and Queanbeyan, saying the immediate threat has now passed.
Earlier this evening, Queanbeyan mayor Tim Overall and a large number of local dignitaries were left running for cover at Town Park after the massive storm hit during the city's Australia Day citizenship ceremony.
Residents were forced to find shelter wherever they could find with one group camped out inside the Queanbeyan Park public toilets.
