Over the past 12 months, Jerrabomberra has seen four new synthetic courts installed as well as additional lighting that now covers all six of the club’s courts.
The new facilities have addressed the club’s longstanding concerns in terms of court availability which had seen the club forced to play ‘home’ competition matches as far afield as Belconnen.
But with more than 320 members making regular use of the courtside amenities, club president John Talbot said an expanded clubhouse and improved bathroom facilities were a priority.
“I think that in terms of our courts and our lighting, the club is now where it needs to be,” Talbot said.
“I would personally consider the new lighting we have had installed some of the best in the ACT competition and number of teams from other clubs have commented on that fact.
“The next thing for us now is to work on getting a proper clubhouse. What is there now was originally a couple of poles with a roof that was then bricked in but we’ve only got one toilet and a very small kitchen servicing quite a large tennis community.”
Talbot said the club had been working with Queanbeyan City Council to address an immediate concern in providing more toilets at the site. Previously the club has been required to bring in portable toilets during major competitions and special events.
While Talbot said the club would fundraise toward constructing improved facilities at the site, he acknowledged any major projects would be largely reliant on council funding.
A new clubhouse would continue Jerrabomberra’s progression having started with just one grass court in the 1997.
On court meanwhile, the club will be looking to continue its successful run this year after finishing off 2012 in style.
As well as claiming the regional Southwell Cup, Jerrabomberra also performed strongly in ACT competition, taking out the Monday night division one junior and senior competitions.
“The club’s done very well both in terms of our membership and also in the way we’ve performed in a number of competitions recently,” Talbot said.
“We’re lucky to have a very active head coach in David Horsfall who is very active in the club and who has helped a number of our juniors transition successfully into senior competition.”
The Jerrabomberra Tennis Club is currently registering players for ACT competition in 2013. Jerrabomberra will also be hosting club social tennis on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights.
