Roos need to pull through

28 Aug, 2009 01:30 PM
A POOR attitude throughout the season ultimately cost the Queanbeyan Kangaroos a place in the Canberra Raiders Cup top four, according to captain-coach Adam Taylor.

Queanbeyan's finals hopes were dashed on Sunday, when they were soundly beaten at Freebody Oval by top-of-the-table West Belconnen.

The result left the Roos three points adrift of fourth spot with just one match to play a final-round clash with the Canberra Scholars at Boomanulla Oval tomorrow.

Taylor said it would be nice to finish the year with a win, but was disappointed his team would once again spend September watching from the sideline.

``I've been trying to think about it all week about summing up our year, and just because you've got good players doesn't mean you're going to have a good team,'' he said.

``I think we just thought there at times we were better than we were, and weren't prepared to do the tough stuff and stick to what we know.

``It's certainly been close but that's been the case for the last couple of years we got off to a poor start and it's cost us.''

The Roos have lost three matches this year to teams above them on the ladder by two points. In contrast, Queanbeyan has won three games by more than 50 points against lower-placed teams.

Taylor has been left frustrated all season by his team's ability to play well against the struggling sides, but failure to back it up in the important games.

Two months ago the Roos pummelled the Scholars by 72 points as part of a three-match winning run, but Taylor said there was no guarantee tomorrow's game would pan out the same way.

``They got a bit of a touch up last week against Woden so I just hope blokes don't lob up thinking that they're going to get an easy game,'' he said.

``If we do that the Scholars are going to pull our pants down.

``They've got a pretty good following, and they probably get the same rap that we do that their supporters are a bit over the top, but that's all part of footy.''

West Belconnen proved far too strong for the Roos last Sunday, making it four wins from four against Queanbeyan opposition this season.
