ITS do or die for the Queanbeyan Blues this Sunday, as they take on Yass at the WBLC for the right to challenge West Belconnen in the Canberra Raiders Cup grand final.
The Blues head into the match full of confidence after three huge wins of late, including their 36-18 demolition of the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last weekend.
In contrast Yass have had a less than healthy preparation for such a big match, having had the bye before being beat 31-26 by a Warriors outfit that played the final fifteen minutes last Sunday with 11 men.
Even though the Magpies seem less than ready for a fired up Blues line up, Queanbeyan coach Danny Baker will still be wary of a side that has beaten the Blues twice already this season.
Asked after last weekends match if he thought the Magpies would be a tough obstacle, Baker said Yass is a great side but his team is ready now to make an assault on the premiership.
Both sides possess a wealth of talent around the ground with a mix of big tough forwards, crafty halves and quick outside men.
In the Centres Queanbeyan have captain and try scoring machine of late Phil Stonham, whose recent move to the number three has bolstered the Queanbeyan backline with his ability to break the line and find the try line.
He finds himself up against one of the most dangerous attacking players in the competition in James Buser, a player who can create something out of nothing and who has a strong defensive game to back up his attacking flair.
Five eighth sees the big Blues number six Craig Rowsell up against the Magpies chief playmaker Scott Waters, Rowsell and Waters are contrasting players with Rowsell more of a running playmaker, while Waters uses his astute passing game to create opportunities.
The Yass half back Tony Worthy was less than impressive last Sunday, and was outplayed by Warriors ace Richie Allan. Unfortunately for Worthy it doesn't get any easier this weekend, as he goes up against Linc MciNerney who is finding new ways to penetrate opposition defences every week.
The front row is set to explode on Sunday, as Damian Booker lines up against Raiders lower grade player Darren Porter. Porter was knocked unconscious in the first minute last weekend and will be ready to contribute more this time around, while Booker will be out to return Porter to Disneyland with his big hitting hard running game.
Probably the biggest test for Queanbeyan will be for lock forward Semisi Vakalahi, who marks up against giant Magpie lock forward Scott Nash. Nash is the most dangerous player in the Yass side and creates most scoring chances for his side. Shutting down Nash means shutting down Yass, so all the Blues must be wary of his position on the park.
With a Grand Final birth at stake this match is set to be a cracker, and I am sure a huge crowd will turn out to the WBLC for what is the match of the year so far.
