RUNNING 120 metres at top speed is something which doesn't come naturally to Lauren Boden.
The 20-year-old ACT runner is more comfortable running the 400 metre hurdles. But you wouldn't know it after watching her win the Queanbeyan Women's Gift over the weekend.
Boden beat training partners Catherine Wild-Taylor and Melissa Breen in a time of 14.07 seconds to take out the $4000 race.
She didn't think her four-and-a-half metre handicap would be enough to hold off Breen, who recently ran 100 metres in 11.33 seconds to become the fastest woman in Australia.
``It turned out that Catherine Wild-Taylor was the one to watch,'' Boden said.
Wild-Taylor had five metres on Boden, who ran off a nine-point-five metre handicap.
Boden said she didn't hit the lead until the last couple of strides.
``It was pretty much the last 10 metres that I really started to gain on her,'' she said.
Boden won her first Gift in wet and windy conditions on Saturday afternoon after three previous unsuccessful attempts.
``This was my fourth one in a row. It was nice to finally get the win,'' she said.
Boden will compete at the Blacktown and Sydney Gifts on December 6 and 12 before her focus shifts back to her pet 400 metre hurdle event.
``Next year I'm looking to get back into my 400 metre hurdle running and making it to Uni Games and the world championships,'' she said.
But she would definitely be back for next year's Queanbeyan Gift, she said.
``They're so much fun,'' Boden said.
``I'll keep going back as much as I can.''
