A TOUCH of at-the-death brilliance from skipper Coral McMurray has helped Queanbeyan move through to the final of the ACT Championship Fours this weekend.
The Queanbeyan foursome of McMurray, Bette McDonald, Margaret Davies and Val Cash will take on Canberra City in Saturday morning’s final at the Queanbeyan Memorial RSL.
Queanbeyan will go in as the underdogs against a fancied City side.
McMurray however, can take plenty of confidence into the encounter after producing the bowl of a lifetime to seal a dramatic quarter-final victory over Yowani earlier in the tournament.
With Queanbeyan trailing 18-15 heading into the final end, McMurray showed perfect poise to collect four shots with her last roll of the match, handing her side the narrowest of victories.
‘‘It’s certainly the sort of thing that doesn’t happen terribly often,’’ McMurray admitted with a laugh.
‘‘It’s a tough call to pick up four shots on an end any time. To do it at the quarter-final level of a state tournament ... it’s probably something I’ll never do again.’’
McMurray was quick to pay tribute to her teammates who had shown plenty of skill in the lead-up to give the side any chance of snatching a late win.
‘‘We knew if we were any hope of picking up all four shots we had to get [our bowls] bunched together in a good area and we did that beautifully,’’ she said.
‘‘Why [Yowani] didn’t just put one in amongst the four we had I’ll never know but it worked out alright for us in the end.’’
On the back of McMurray’s heroics, the side went on to post a comfortable five-shot victory over Weston Creek in the semi-finals.
Queanbeyan will face a far stiffer test against a City side tomorrow skippered by local bowling legend nteLoretta Gillespie.
‘‘[Loretta] has been a state skip for more years than I’ve been playing bowls and is always very consistent,’’ McMurray said.
‘‘We’ll definitely be going in as underdogs but if we play as well as we did last Saturday [against Weston Creek], we’ll be in there all the way.’’
