QUEANBEYAN will play host to some of the finest lawn bowlers in the country later this year after the Queanbeyan Bowling Club was selected to host the Australian Over-60s Sides Championships.
The club is also in the running to stage the prestigious National Champion of Champions tournament in October. To earn hosting rights for both major competitions in the one year would be a stunning achievement for the club.
The Queanbeyan RSL Memorial Bowling Club, meanwhile, will host this season’s ACT Men’s Pennant finals.
The Australian Over-60s Sides Championships, to be held from October 16 to 19, is one of the main events on the Australian bowling calendar.
It will also be the largest lawn bowls competition ever held in Queanbeyan.
More than 200 of Australia’s top bowlers from every state and territory will converge on Queanbeyan for the championships according to club president Dave Newham.
‘‘It’s going to be huge,’’ Newham said. ‘‘It’s not just a lawn bowls tournament, it’s a major national sporting event that will see the best bowlers in the country coming to Queanbeyan.
‘‘It’s certainly a coup for the club. It’s the sort of event that will get the club a lot of coverage.
‘‘Hopefully these guys will be going back to their home states afterward talking about how well they were looked after in Queanbeyan and it will put us on the map for future events.’’
While it is yet to be confirmed, the club is also a strong contender to stage the National Champion of Champions tournament.
As the largest club affiliated with Bowls ACT, Queanbeyan is one of the only venues in the region equipped to handle major national bowls events.
However, Bowls ACT President Kevin Antoine said hosting rights for the competition had yet to be determined.
‘‘Where the Champion of Champions will be held has not been decided but we will be looking at that over the next couple of weeks,’’ he said.
‘‘The fact Queanbeyan has already received the Sides Championships, which is probably our biggest event this year, may tend to leave them out of it.
‘‘Certainly Queanbeyan is more than capable of hosting the event and it could well fall that way.’’
In response, Newham said he was confident Queanbeyan would prove the best option once all the arrangements were finalised.
‘‘We’re the only club where you can hold the whole competition in the one place, so when it comes to hosting these events we’ve already got a foot in the door,’’ Newham said.
The Queanbeyan Bowling Club boasts five competition standard greens; two more than any other Canberra club.
