When called upon to join the ACT under 19 squad for this week's national championships, four Queanbeyan players couldn't imagine things would feel quite so familiar.
Vele Dukoski, Michael Spaseski, Luke Bush, and team captain Jordan McLennan are all in the ACT squad for this week's championships in Canberra, with the teammates set to play the second day of a two day match against South Australia at Freebody Oval today.
ACT coach Andrew Dawson believed the comfort of a home ground and fellow teammates was a massive boost for the Queanbeyan players, who all play in first grade for the Queanbeyan Cricket Club.
“They come to the ground and you know straight away they are at home, this is their ground,'' Dawson said.
“Being comfortable in cricket means a lot and these guys are able to come here and be comfortable with their teammates and know the ground they are on.''
Dawson said considering the history of the club in Queanbeyan, it was no surprise to see so many young players emerging into the frame for state selection.
“Queanbeyan cricket has a really great culture, with a really good history of strong cricketing families,'' he said.
“It really isn't a surprise that these guys are coming through now given the great older players that are there guiding them at club level.''
The ACT squad has enjoyed mixed fortunes, winning two of four matches during the tournament, with the prized scalp of Victoria coming thanks largely to Spaseski.
“That was a big win for us, and Michael [Spaseski] turned that game for us,'' Dawson explained.
“We were defending a pretty low total of around 170 and his bowling turned the tide, he was reverse swinging it and that really put [Victoria] off their game.''
Spaseski said he was thrilled to be among his teammates during the increasingly professional domestic championships.
“It's great to be with the guys you know, it does make being a part of the team a lot easier,'' he said.
“It's been a really great experience, we are getting the chance to learn a lot with replays of our game.''
The Queanbeyan players have been playing alongside the best in the ACT, but have also had the opportunity to face Australian cricketers of the future.
“It's definitely something you will remember, playing against some of the best around Australia,'' Spaseski said.
“One day I might be able to look on television and say I bowled to that guy, or I hit that guy for four.''
Queanbeyan's Vele Dukoski said he was enjoying the experience against Australia's best, but said he was learning a lot from being alongside former rivals in grade cricket as well.
“There are a couple of guys that are on the team that have had the wood on me before and gotten me out,'' he said.
“It's good to be with them and learn from them ... it might mean I'm a bit harder to get out next time.''
The ACT squad complete the two-day clash with South Australia at Freebody today before taking on Tasmania and the Northern Territory in the final matches of the championships.
