Queanbeyan cricket coach has eye on the prize

05 Oct, 2007 09:10 AM
HEAD coach of the Queanbeyan Cricket Club Peter Baker said the Club will aim to win the ACT Cricket Club Championship this season.

After finishing in second place on last year's table behind Tuggeranong, Baker is confident the Club has improved enough to challenge heavyweights Tuggeranong, Weston Creek and ANU.

"There is a general consensus around the club that we are about 30 per cent stronger this time around than we were last year.

"We've aimed to win the Club Championship this season, and it's very much in our sights."

Baker said Tuggeranong's second grade side had the edge over Queanbeyan, but with the Club's recruiting during the off-season, the gap will have shortened.

He said the inclusions of players such as Jonathon Dean, Grant Miller and Jonathon McLean added great depth to the side. "McLean hasn't arrived yet, but anyone who has played first class cricket in South Africa and England is obviously a quality player.

"We lost two servants to the club in Nathan Reid and Stephen Frost, but I think the Club has covered the gap left by them pretty well."
