Panthers are ready to roar

Monaro Panthers Football Club kicked off the 2010 season with the election of its new executive committee.

In appointing Mauro Davanzo as president, John Barilaro as vice-president, Alexis Nguyen as secretary, Cathy Davanzo as registrar and Dominic Stramandinoli as treasurer, the club is assured a stable base to work from.

“2010 is going to be a huge year for soccer in Queanbeyan and a very demanding one for the committee,” the president said.

“Queanbeyan will field a Premier League team, introduce a seniors pathways program and with attention starting to focus on the World Cup, we're expecting to register close to 1000 Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra kids this year.

“That's brilliant for the kids, brilliant for soccer and brilliant for Queanbeyan.”

While the Panther's main focus will be to ensure every child in the region can enjoy playing soccer, the Monaro boss said his side also had the future of soccer in Queanbeyan on their agenda.

Davanzo said the Panthers were preparing for 2010 and beyond.

“We'll prepare a new constitution to cater for the introduction of a Premier League side, we will continue to work with Queanbeyan council to identify additional permanent soccer grounds we want to increase community involvement in the game and continue what has been a very successful mixed Summer Sixes program,” he said.

“This new committee is already working behind the scenes to prepare for the year ahead, getting equipment, uniforms and all the logistics in place and ready for registrations on February 20 and 27, to be held at the Roo's club in Queanbeyan.”

Davanzo said the Panthers were looking forward to implementing the new “Panthers football revolution” philosophy in the region and welcoming all Monaro Panthers players back, as well as “meeting some new ones”.

Full steam ahead for Panthers' Premier League

Since the announcement in early November that the Monaro Panthers Football Club would re-enter the Capital Football Premier League competition, it has been full steam ahead for the hard working committee and volunteers.

While president Davanzo and vice-president Barilaro have been working away at the logistics of getting the senior club ready for the 2010 season off the park, head coach John Bull and assistant coach Tilly Carbone are in the process of assembling Monaro's premier league teams that will contest the 2010 championship.

The club must field four teams in the Premier League first grade, reserve grade, under 18s and under 16s.

While the club is negotiating with some key players for the first grade squad, competition for places in the three feeder grades has been strong.

Davanzo said no less than 68 players had trialled for the teams and with further trials in January and February those numbers are expected to reach at least 90.

Bull and Carbone said they had been impressed with the quality of players who have trialled with the club so far.

They said that a particularly pleasing fact was that a number of former Monaro Panthers juniors had turned out after having to leave the club during the past five years in order to chase senior football.

The Monaro Panthers junior club has an enviable record of producing quality players with many of them having been selected for the ACT representative teams and ACT Academy of Sport squads during the past five years.

The pair suggested that with the return of these sorts of players, Monaro would be very competitive in all grades from day one of the competition and were “excited about what lies ahead for the club”.
