Higgs out of action

12 Dec, 2008 09:43 AM
BLUEBAGS Captain Mark Higgs has succumbed to a back injury and will not play in Queanbeyan's last two-day match of the year against Eastlake at Freebody Oval starting tomorrow.

Higgs has been advised by medical staff to rest a troublesome back strain which he said needed time to recover.

``I think it's just an over-use thing really and it needs a break, I've played a lot of cricket over the last few years,'' Higgs said.

``I've had some physio on it this week and that doesn't seem to be doing much, it's just really tight. If I don't play this two-dayer I can get a really good rest over Christmas and hopefully I'll be right to go in the new year.''

Queanbeyan hopes to bounce back from last weekend's disappointing loss to the ANU.

Chasing 356, the Bluebags were cruising at 2/259 thanks to 110 from Jono Dean and 95 from Pete Coleborne, but a massive collapse in the middle and lower order meant Queanbeyan fell 29 runs short of its target.

Higgs said it was a shame to throw away the game when his team was in such a strong position.

``The top order did well for us again but it's the same blokes getting runs for us every week,'' Higgs said.

``It's time for the lower order to start supporting them if we're going to bounce back or we're going to keep making it hard on ourselves.''

Meanwhile, the Bluebags face Leeton on Sunday in a must-win one-day game also at Freebody Oval.

Should Queanbeyan beat their south-central NSW opponents they will advance to the super 8s stage of the Konica Cup.
