FREEBODY Oval has been selected to host three matches as part of the national under 17s women's cricket tournament in early January next year.
Western Australia will play twenty20 games against South Australia and the ACT on Monday, January 12 and the ACT and South Australia will face off in a 45-over game two days later.
Part-time volunteer curator and Queanbeyan Cricket selector Greg Dawes said being selected to host three games in next year's national carnival was just reward for a lot of hard work by the club.
``This season we've spent more time on the wicket, it's got more grass coverage, it's been looked after over the winter break and it's been scarified,'' Dawes said.
``I reckon it's probably improved so far by about 60 per cent.''
Traditionally, Freebody Oval had been considered a difficult wicket to play on with its inconsistent bounce and a thick outfield, but Dawes said the pitch was now a lot more friendly to batsmen.
``The bounce is a lot better now, it's more consistent and the batsmen are confident to play their shots a bit more _ the outfield has been cut 16 millimetres lower than it's ever been cut before so it's gone from 45 to 29,'' Dawes said.
``Last year and the year before, Freebody had an average rating of four to five, with five's being the lowest. This year it's been getting rated two consistently and one game they wanted to rate it at one as the top wicket.''
Queanbeyan City Council has played a large role in improving the condition of the ground, providing funding for a new roller, mower and outfield markers.
Parks supervisor Barry Mather said Freebody Oval was in the best condition he'd ever seen.
