Bluebags underdogs against premiers

12 Jan, 2004 02:38 PM
This Saturday, The Queanbeyan Bluebags will commence a two-day match against the highly fancied reigning premiers, Weston Creek, at Freebody Oval.

The Weston Creek boast in form Comets representative batsmen Cade Brown and Adam Rynehart, and are strong premiership favourites again this season.

A win against Weston Creek would put the Bluebags right back into contention for a finals berth, they are currently in sixth place.

Captain Stephen Frost has said, "Missing the next stage of the Konica Cup shattered us, but we are over that now and focused on the main competition," reflecting upon the disappointment of missing the Konica Cup One Day semi finals for the first time ever.

His young side is, "hungrier than ever, and ready to rock some of more experienced sides in the New Year."

Young middle order batsmen Rohan Rehwinkle and Sean Osborne were starting to find form before the Christmas break. Plenty more will expected of them now that they are established members of the side

Experienced campaigner Michael Frost believes for Queanbeyan to be successful, "guys need to start converting starts of 20 and 30 into big half centuries and hundreds."

His opening partnership is vital to lay the foundation for the rest of the team to build on. Dean Mansfield and Peter Coleborne have asked Santa for runs in the New Year, so look out for big performances from them tomorrow.

Exciting all rounder Dean Southwell returns to the side this weekend, after missing some matches with ACT Under 19's commitments. His proven ability to move the ball off the seam and handy hard hitting in the lower order, has made him a valuable member of the side.

He will probably share the new ball with medium pacer Geoff Ryan, who has been the most economical of the Queanbeyan bowlers this season. He picked up big wickets against Tuggeranong at Freebody, and will be hoping for a similar performance against Weston Creek.

Frost will also do his fair share of bowling, and is a real "Colin Miller", in that he can bowl medium pace or off spin.
