Bluebags set for win

16 Feb, 2006 01:40 PM
THE Queanbeyan Bluebags will be looking for a much needed win on Saturday, when they conclude their two day match against the Ginnindera Tigers at Boomanulla.

After limiting the Tigers to 247 runs last weekend, the Bluebags sit in an interesting position at 3/78, still trailing Ginnindera by 169 runs with seven wickets in the shed.

Coach of Queanbeyan Peter Baker said he believes his side has what it takes to knock off the Tigers, and that patience from his batsmen would be the key to victory.

"We have a whole days play to score the runs so it would be pretty disapointing if we didn't come away with the win," Baker said. "We still have some good batting to come so I'm confident our boys can get the job done."

Baker said he hoped Queanbeyan could make a steady start to the innings this weekend, and build partnerships to secure the win.

"At the moment Peter Coleborne and Dean Mansfield are out there and they are both capable of scoring runs," he said. "We still have our skipper Adam Heading to come, as well as Simon Fahey and the experienced Michael Frost."

The Bluebags are still a slim chance to make the finals this season, but must secure a win on Saturday to hold any chance of making their way to a semi-final appearance.

Baker said the remainding matches of the season also gives the chance to blood a few new players, and he was happy with the way the new brigade of players were performing.

"It's important to give some young guys a chance in the top grade so they are ready to step up in the next few seasons," he said. "Eigtheen year old Scott Henry took 5/29 last weekend, and matches like this are good experience for someone like him."

Second grade

In the second grade contest a low scoring encounter last weekend gives Queanbeyan seconds the chance to snatch an outright win, after one stage facing the possibility of a heavy defeat.

Making only 105 in their first innings last weekend, the Bluebags fought back strongly to have Ginnindera in a similar position at stumps at 6/110.

After losing wickets early Michael Noble (17), and Troy Drayton (21) rescued Queanbeyan from an embarrasing score, and gave the Bluebag bowlers something to bowl at.

And with Queanbeyan bowler Stewart Baines in form from his five wickets against Norths in their previous match, captain Dean Stewart is hoping his side can finish the Tiger tail early on Saturday.

"Ideally we would like to get them early and get back out in the middle," Stewart said. "That would give us thirty overs to get some quick runs before having another go at them and hopefully winning outright."
