Bluebags gear up for season opener

14 Oct, 2004 10:45 AM
Peter 'Sneaky' Coleborne will lead the Queanbeyan Bluebags first grade side during the coming 2004/2005 ACT Cricket Association season.

The 24 year old, taking over from the retired Stephen Frost, takes on the captaincy responsibilities for an incredibly young side, but one that should not be underestimated.

The mild mannered, level headed Coleborne who will open the batting this season, will take on a side with a lot of potential. This potential will need to be at ísit best to pose a serious challenge.

The Bluebags have picked up several key signing's to fill the void left by the departure of the experienced Frost.

The big recruit in the off-season was luring former Canberra Comet, Adam Heading, back to town from the Maroochydore Cricket Club. Heading, 22, is limited in the amount of bowling these days due to chronic back problems, but has returned with the same hard hitting flair as a batsman that many Canberra bowlers would prefer to forget.

Heading has also been appointed as Head Coach and said that he's, ready for the challenges that lie ahead this season, and is excited at the prospect of working with the many talented junior players that Queanbeyan have at the moment.

There will also be another couple of familiar faces back in first grade. Jamie Anderson returns after a two-year break from the sport to concentrate on his studies.

Michael Stachow will also don the whites after missing a season overseas last summer. Many will remember Stachow as the leading wicket taker in the ACTCA only two seasons ago.

Stachow will share the new ball for Queanbeyan with tearaway quick and recent addition to the Comets squad, Nathan Madsen.

In his second season with the Bluebags, Madsen, a former Queensland Under 19 representative, has worked hard on his fitness and strength in the off-season.

"I really think our side has the passion and commitment to be finals contenders," said Madsen.

Don't be surprised if he scores handy runs in the lower order either this year.

Dean Mansfield, Raglan Maddox, Sean Osborne, Nathan Reid, and Andrew Badke are the other core players of the first grade squad. However, there are several other players ready to impress the selectors and pursue claims in the higher grades.

Simon Fahey will captain second grade, and his deputy will be Graeme Alexander.

Exciting teenagers Michael Baker, Dean Stewart and John Murphy should provide extra spark to the side that narrowly missed out on a finals berth last season.

All rounder Ben Gray will look to continue his fine form with the bat from the end of last season, scoring a century in the last round.

Captain Colin Crouch, in the thirds, will get good support from all rounder Rob Warren and newcomer Mark Verring, who has joined the Bluebags from Melbourne. Verring will be an asset in the middle order and has a wealth of experience from Melbourne District Cricket.

Fourth grade will be led by Jim Martin who is excited at the fact that his side will share the Queanbeyan Town Park for home games.

The fighting fours could again be a force this season with its usual mixture of wily veterans and enthusiastic youngsters.

Geoff McMahon takes over the reins in fifth grade ahead of the experienced Ron McGlashan.

Fifths will be hoping to go one better after losing the grand final, and with the likes of Vince Bulger, Daniel Clugston and Pete Jensen are ready for another big year.

Training is Tuesday (today) and Thursday 5pm till 7pm. Any interested persons should contact Club Coach, Adam Heading, on 0405760939.
