QUEANBEYAN master blaster Mark Higgs has sounded an ominous warning to the rest of the competition after the Bluebags dominant start to the Twenty20 Konica Minolta Cup.
Higgs said the risk of complacency was now Queanbeyan’s greatest danger as the club sought to recapture the only Cricket ACT first-grade title it didn’t already hold.
The former NSW and South Australian representative’s comments came in the wake of the Bluebags commanding performance over the competition’s first two rounds.
The defending one-day and two-day premiers were largely unchallenged as they notched up four wins from as many starts to kick off their Twenty20 campaign.
The lop-sided nature of the results, which included a 10-wicket win over current one-day ladder leaders Eastlake in Queanbeyan’s first game of the tournament, was particularly telling.
“If we can play to our potential we should win the competition,” Higgs said. “It’s been a fantastic start, I think we’ve played pretty well and we’ve basically crunched every team we’ve played.”
“The only thing stopping us would be complacency. We’re aware of what happened last year [Queanbeyan’s 80-run loss to Tuggeranong in the final] and we’re not going to let it happen again this time around.”
Queanbeyan’s comprehensive defeat of Eastlake was followed by victories against Ginninderra and North Canberra/Gungahlin before the Bluebags put Albury Wodonga to the sword on Sunday afternoon.
In a phenomenal display of power hitting, Queanbeyan compiled 3/234 before restricting Albury to just 142 from their 20 overs.
The Bluebags’ success has been down in no small part to Higgs himself, who has compiled 172 runs at a strike rate of 200.
While happy with Queanbeyan’s work from the batting crease, Higgs said the side still had plenty of improvement to make in the field despite conceding an average of just 133 runs per match.
“Our bowling hasn’t been up to scratch and we’ve given away three or four chances as well so those are areas we need to work on,” he said.
Queanbeyan will next take on Leeton DCA at Freebody Oval from 10am on Sunday, November 27.
