AN opening-day century from Bluebags captain Jono Dean has put Queanbeyan in a strong position to take first-innings points against North Canberra/Gungahlin tomorrow.
Dean bludgeoned 150 off the hapless Norths attack last weekend, helping Queanbeyan to 5/308 after a rain-delayed start. Victorian import Sam Miller put an end to the slaughter, dismissing Dean late in the day, but the damage had been well and truly inflicted.
The Queanbeyan captain said his teammates had provided excellent support throughout the Leg 1innings. ``Everyone who batted played a part, we batted really well in partnerships and turned over the strike as much as possible as a result we scored 300 plus in 79 overs, five wickets down,'' Dean said.
``The wicket was quite slow all day which made batting tough early on, but we stuck to our plans of getting ourselves set to the conditions.
``I was really impressed with the way young Deano Solway batted, even though he didn't get a big score. He came out, copped a bit of stick early but stuck it out.
``Also Adam Heading, he hasn't played much cricket over the past year and he went out there on Saturday Leg 2looking a million bucks.''
Dean said dismissing Miller and Peter Radford would be the key to bowling Norths out tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Queanbeyan hopes to make it two wins from two in the Konica Cup on Sunday, when it faces Ginninderra at Kippax 2. The Bluebags easily accounted for ANU last week at Freebody Oval, with Mark Higgs claiming five wickets and Dean Southwell taking three. ANU was dismissed for 102 which Queanbeyan chased down in 20 overs to earn a double bonus point. Opener Michael Frost top scored with 39, while Dean hit a quick-fire 25, and youngster Vele Dukoski managed 20.
