Men hope women will draw crowds

As one of Queanbeyan's most successful sporting teams, the Yowies will head into this year's men's state basketball league full of confidence having lost just four matches in the past two years.

The men will be buoyed by a likely return of the women's team to the state competition after two years in the wilderness, with final nominations due today.

Long time player Adam Jackson said he was excited about the season ahead and confirmed what most men already know women pull in the crowds.

“We are excited to get the girls back, there are always a few more people at the games when the girls are playing,” he said.

“When you get more than 100 people up at that stadium the atmosphere is unreal.

“It's also good for when we play away people tend to stick around and watch the men if the women have played.”

Fellow Yowie Jasmine Combe said while the possibility of playing for Queanbeyan in the state league was exciting, the bus trips were not something she was particularly fond of.

“It's not going to be great on the away trips, having to sit on the bus with all the smelly boys,” Combe said with a laugh.

“They really do stink after a game, but at least they provide the entertainment.”

Having spent last season courtside after a knee reconstruction, Combe was looking forward to the prospect of representing her home town.

The last time she played was in the ABA competition, where she sustained the knee injury.

“It's been a few years since we played in the state league so to get back there would be exciting,” she said.

“We've got some fantastic players who have said they would like to play if the team goes ahead, we will just have to wait and see.”

Jackson was also optimistic about the coming season and said the return of Gunners Adam del'Aquilla and Sam Bresnik to the Yowies would make a huge difference.

“Having players of their quality come back will certainly make a big difference,” Jackson said.

“Apart from the game we lost to Griffith, the only time we went down last year was our final match, against Penrith by four points in over time.

“They went on to win the entire competition, so with the Gunners guys coming back we are going to be very strong.”

Both the men's and women's sides will hold open trials next week at the Queanbeyan basketball stadium.

Men's trials will be held on February 8 and 15 between 8 and 9pm. Women's trials will be held on February 9 and 16 between 7.30 and 9pm.
