THE Queanbeyan Racehorse Trainers Association has raised about $9000 for jockey Paul Goode, who was seriously injured on Monday, June 29 when he fell from his horse.
The 31-year-old suffered severe spinal damage in the incident, and was diagnosed a T4 paraplegic at Prince of Wales Hospital in Sydney, where he has been ever since.
He has no feeling from the chest down, but can still move his arms, shoulder, neck and head, and hopes to be back home before Christmas this year.
In support of their mate, the trainers association organised a raffle, raising money for Mr Goode to assist him once he was discharged from hospital.
Local trainer Darren Bailey said the response from the racing community had been outstanding.
``All the NSW jockeys have been fantastic, they've just dug really deep,'' Mr Bailey said.
``Roly Saxton, he's an ex-local jockey based in Newcastle now, he's done a fantastic job galvanising the boys and getting them behind it.
``It really puts a lot of faith in the goodwill of the racing industry.''
Queanbeyan trainer Rex Cole won the raffle, which was drawn yesterday morning by State Member for Monaro, Steve Whan.
The prize was a stallion service fee to Denon, donated by Independent Stallions Victoria, as well as six weeks agistment thanks to Goulburn Park, and transport supplied by MLT Transport.
Mr Bailey labelled the raffle a success, but said the support shown to Mr Goode over the past three months had been even better.
``It's not actually raising the money but it's the way the whole racing community has come together for him, got behind the whole thing,'' Mr Bailey said.
``It's just trying to let Paul know that no one's forgotten about him and we're there for him when the need comes.
``He's a champion bloke and he's really well liked and respected amongst the Queanbeyan community. It's a tragedy, but in racing it happens, unfortunately it's just part and parcel of the game.''
Mr Goode began his jockey career in England before moving to Australia to ride the provincial and country circuits.
His biggest win came when he rode The Jonker to victory in the Inglis Classic for local trainer Myffy Rae.
