AN eclectic mix of roots-fusion tunes will keep the crowd at the Artists Shed moving this weekend as Canberra outfit Freyja’s Rain comes to town.
Led by the soulful voice of Jenny Sawer, the group has inspired and entertained audiences across the border for the past three years.
“We use the label roots-fusion because our music covers so many genres – from blues, gospel, jazz, folk and reggae,” Sawer said.
“It’s hard to write that all out so we just say roots fusion.”
Promising to have audiences singing and dancing along, Sawer will be joined at Sunday’s Shed Session by Alan Hilvert-Bruce on guitar, Brendon Houlahan on bass and Mark Lever’s on drums.
The two 45-minute sets will be the band’s first appearance in Queanbeyan.
“We do some covers, but mainly we play our own original tunes,” Sawer said.
“We have a couple of ballads but mostly they are all pretty uplifting, up-tempo tunes – plenty of positive vibes.
“We also slot in a few jazz standards like Summertime and Fever that people know pretty well.”
Freyja’s Rain will be supported by Celtic band Humbug, which has already built a solid reputation, playing regularly at the shed.
The Celtic big band features some of the local folk scene’s most experienced musicians and audiences can expect to see and hear anything from six to 10 members on stage at any time.
The Shed Sessions are held on the first and third Sunday’s of the month at the Artists Shed, 14 Foster Street, Queanbeyan from 2pm.
