Roos club goes a little bit country

13 May, 2011 10:36 AM
Country music legend Wayne Horsburgh will return to Queanbeyan next weekend to support local kids in need.

For the past 25 years Horsburgh has divided his time between his Sydney home and his American fan base in Branson, Missouri.

Now back home for good, the award winning entertainer said it was about time he came back to Queanbeyan.

“It's been many, many years. I performed at the Bungendore festival a long time ago so another visit is long overdue,” he said.

“I am really looking forward to it.”

Well known for his smooth voice, broad vocal range and yodelling ability, Horsburgh will take to the Kangaroo Club stage on May 22 with good friends Bob Howe and Greg Hooper.

The three piece outfit is more than qualified to play all the hits country fans know and love.

“I was influenced over the years by Slim Whitman, Frank Ifield, and Martin Robbins,” he said.

“It's a more traditional style of country.

“I am also fairly well known as a yodeler.

“We'll also squeeze a few yodel songs in, people still love to hear them. Songs like Cattle Call and Pinto Pal. We'll be using some backing tracks as well so with two guitars and a keyboard it's a very full sound.”

The afternoon of music is the second in the 2011 series of concerts presented by the Lions Club of Queanbeyan to raise money for local charities.

Lions member Di Masters said all proceeds from the event will support Children With Special Needs.

“All of a sudden there are little people popping up everywhere that need help,” Mrs Masters said.

“We raised $3000 for the ACT Eden Monaro Cancer Support Group at our last concert. If we can do that again it will help a lot of families.”

Horsburgh has received critical acclaim from audiences since he first picked up his 12-string guitar and formed a band as an 11-year-old in Benalla, Victoria. During his 35-year career the 56-year-old has picked up a number of awards, including five Australian Entertainment awards for excellence in live entertainment.

In 2004 he was also nominated for the prestigious Australian Showbusiness Ambassador of the Year award, joining the ranks of Barry Humphries, Kylie Minogue and Keith Urban.

The afternoon of entertainment will kick off at 2pm on May 22 at the Kangaroo Club, Queanbeyan.
