Police have issued a warning to the public after two separate incidents of people attempting to solicit donations for flood victims near Queanbeyan and the Central Coast in recent days.
The first scam reported to police is a person ringing residents in the the Bungendore area claiming to represent the NSW State Emergency Service (SES), selling tickets for a raffle to aid flood victims.
Information from the NSW SES is that they do run a raffle for their volunteers but they have no raffle to benefit flood victims. The raffle for their volunteers is legitimate and callers are clearly identified as being from the NSW SES Volunteers Association.
The second incident is of people claiming to represent the NSW SES collecting for flood victims in the Port Macquarie area.
Information from the NSW SES is that they do not doorknock for collections.
NSW Police Emergency Management Corporate Spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Mark Murdoch, said it is very disappointing that some people in our community try to take advantage of tragic situations like this.
“These people have no shame and the NSW Police Force remains committed to prosecuting any one caught operating such activities.
“If you believe you have been the victim of such a scam you are urged to contact your local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. All information will be treated in strict confidence,” Assistant Commissioner Murdoch said.
