THREE-quarters of the funding pie for two vital roads in Queanbeyan has been pledged by the Coalition if it wins government.
It followed mayor Tim Overall's call to Eden-Monaro candidates to pledge their financial support for the Ellerton Drive (Ring Road) extension and the new Dunns Creek Road.
On Wednesday, Liberal candidate for Eden-Monaro David Gazard called business representatives and the mayor to the end of Ellerton Drive to announce a Coalition government would put forward $3 million for the projects if elected.
It's $1 million short of the $4 million requested, but the mayor has welcomed the offer.
Queanbeyan Development Board chair Jamie Cregan said the pledge was ``excellent for the Queanbeyan community.''
``There's no issue it's not $4 million,''Mr Cregan said.
Mr Gazard said the community had been talking about the roads for 30 years.
``It's imperative to the future of this region that this work is undertaken,'' he said.
``Residents want the trucks off the main road ...this is a safe and more convenient way.''
He said the funding would ``help achieve the vast bulk'' of studies for the roads.
Cr Overall said roads were the most important infrastructure that needed to be upgraded to match the city's projected growth into the future.''
``In May this year I wrote to all three candidates to highlight our community priorities...number one being ring and Dunns Creek Road,'' he said.
Cr Overall said it was ``essential'' works on the roads proceeded.
When quizzed whether he would take a side politically the mayor said he would remain ``neutral.''
``I'm having discussions with all three candidates,'' he said. According to traffic studies commissioned by council, the Ellerton Drive extension is vital to ensuring Queanbeyan's traffic network can operate as the population grows.
``If this road isn't constructed, Queanbeyan residents will have to put up with increasing delays and unacceptable queuing through the city centre,'' Cr Overall said.
``This road will help take some of the traffic out of Queanbeyan's CBD and will make the area much more pedestrian friendly.''
The Dunns Creek Road will connect the future suburbs of Googong and Tralee with the Monaro Highway into central Canberra and Tuggeranong.
