Dane Zunic, 62, pleaded guilty to common assault after he slapped a woman across the face during an argument on January 10.
The court was told that the Queanbeyan resident had approached the victim to speak about allegations she believed he made about her growing marijuana.
It was added that offensive language was directed towards Zunic who then hit her face.
Magistrate Van Zuylen said it was a disgraceful act and that the offender's record for criminal activity went back to 1968.
“Your behaviour was a disgrace ... slapping a 59-year-old woman in the street over an argument where you think she may have wronged you,” he said.
Zunic was fined $1000, placed on a Section 9 bond for 18 months and ordered to pay $76 in court costs.
“You're put on notice,” Magistrate Van Zuylen said.
“If you breach that bond by assaulting her again, you will go to prison.”
Zunic then questioned the verdict and said that he didn't have an opportunity to say anything. He added that he could not pay the $1000 fine.
“Well you can sort that out with the court,” Magistrate Van Zuylen said.
