Man avoids jail after 11th drink driving charge

10 Feb, 2012 09:47 AM
A JERRABOMBERRA man facing his 11th drink driving charge was sentenced to 80 hours community service in Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday.

Magistrate Chris Bone heard Riley White, 50, had a long history of offences with 10 drink driving charges between 1979 and 2001.

His most recent offence occurred just after midnight on October 16 when White was stopped by police for a random breath test on Lowe Street.

He allegedly returned a blood alcohol concentration of 0.181.

Magistrate Bone said White had no offences since he was released from a six month jail sentence for drink driving in 2001.

He said the long break in offending and his efforts to change his behaviour were the reasons why White wasn’t facing a jail term.

‘‘One would assume that once he got out of jail he decided to do something about his lifestyle, and that is what he did,’’ Magistrate Bone said.

White was also disqualified from driving for two years

People wonder why there is no faith in the justice system.

My brother was speeding over the limit by 25km+ on his p's to get to an emergency at home after calling the ambulance on the way. when my brother tried to fight the suspension in court he has his licence suspended for 3 yrs and prior to his hearing the person before him had 8 convictions of drink driving and she gave him a fine.. shows how the justice system works.

Exactly Emma. That's why people kept drinking and driving - because they can get away with it with no jail time. The police put the effort into trying to stop drink drivers, then the courts just let them go. Our justice system is a joke.

Pathetic excuse for a justice system-does he have to kill one of our family members before he goes to jail????

Be warned-drink drive and hurt my family and you will think the world has just ended.

I'm stunned at the stupidity that a person, a mature adult would drive under the influence of so much alcohol, a level of blood alcohol content where a driver would have had difficulty walking, standing, have incontinence and near total loss of motor functions! My sons are just about to get their licences, how sick with worry can we feel when we know that there is always going to be one out there on the road.

Our court system better get tougher Permanent cancellation of a drivers licence should be minimum penalty!
