RESIDENTS at the Kawaree Gardens Retirement Centre have been embracing modern gaming technology with their new Nintendo Wii.
Queanbeyan High School students recently visited the centre to give residents a lesson in how to use their new toy.
QHS teacher Lorraine Ebert said the trip was part of the school's focus on community outreach.
``The students and seniors engaged in numerous games, including tennis and bowling,'' she said.
``One senior, Gary Bladen, managed to get a strike on his first game.
``Such fun was had by all that the Queanbeyan High mentors are looking forward to follow-up sessions with their `students'.''
A diversional therapist at Kawaree Gardens, Brooke Beuchamp, said the residents were a little apprehensive of the technology at first, but became more comfortable with such great teachers.
``They really did enjoy it,'' she said.
``I think it was good for them because they don't see many younger children around the facility so it was good for them to interact with them and learn form them as well.
``The visit was part of our school's Intergenerational Education Program, which began in 1999.''
Over the past months a number of Kawaree residents have visited the school to participate in discussions with Year 8 students to reflect upon life in earlier times.
It is planned to have a number of students from Year 8 visit Kawaree Lodge on a regular basis to provide more training for the seniors in the use of the new technology.
