Kelly commits to road

30 Jul, 2010 10:19 AM
FIFTY per cent of the funding needed for the Dunns Creek Road extension is already on the table.

On Wednesday, Labor Member for Eden-Monaro, Mike Kelly, said he would endeavour to get the balance from the Building Better Regional Cities Program.

The extension is considered ``vital'' with the Queanbeyan population tipped to nearly double by 2021.

Tralee developers, the Village Building Company, agreed to fund up to 50 per cent of construction costs for the road in July last year after the release of the Draft Queanbeyan Strategic Traffic Plan 2031.

Last week mayor Tim Overall announced he had written to all three Federal election candidates.

``Upgrading Queanbeyan's road network and addressing the main street traffic issue is the number one community priority of this council,'' he said.

This week Dr Kelly met with Village Building Company, CEO, Bob Winnell, at Tralee.

Dr Kelly said nobody was ``pretending this is going to be easy or fast but I for one want to get the ball rolling on this ASAP.'' If re-elected, Dr Kelly will work with council to apply for funding under the Government Building Better Regional Cities program, if a Labor Government is reelected.

The program will see $200 million invested to help build up to 15,000 more affordable homes in regional cities over three years.

It's aimed at reducing pressure on major cities by investing in infrastructure projects in regional cities which support new housing, including roads, drains, sewerage pipes, and community infrastructure such as parks and community centres.

``This is an important project for our community's long term transport needs,'' Dr Kelly said.

``Every time I go door knocking or hold a mobile office in Jerrabomberra or Queanbeyan this issue comes up.''

Dr Kelly said his next step would involve working with council to craft a successful bid for funding.

``If our funding submission is successful we'll be a whole lot closer to making this project a reality,'' Dr Kelly said.

He said the project would deliver more affordable housing, greater amenity to the residents of Jerrabomberra and the future residents of Googong and Tralee, and relieve traffic.
