Keeping the peace

10 Feb, 2012 09:28 AM
MOST days Jodi Ross is a regular mum living in Queanbeyan.

She’s the president of the Sunrise Netball Club and an avid Tigers supporter.

But for the past four months life has been anything but ordinary.

As a member of the RAAF Sergeant Ross has been deployed to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula where she helps monitor the Treaty of Peace between Egypt and Israel.

Operation Mazurka is the Australian Defence Force contribution to the multinational force and observes the border in accordance with the treaty.

It’s not only the first deployment for the Queanbeyan mum, she’s also the first female member of the RAAF to serve in the Sinai since the 1980s.

Sergeant Ross works in the communications and technology area with a boss from the USA and alongside colleagues from the local population.

‘‘It is something I have always wanted to do in my Air Force career and now I have been able to achieve this,’’ she said.

‘‘It certainly has been awesome learning about the local culture from the technicians I work with. It is an opportunity that not everyone gets.

‘‘In fact, with eleven different nations, all the different cultures and the languages are a challenge. The other militaries don’t necessarily run the way we do.’’

Sergeant Ross joined the RAAF 22 years ago and spent her first two years as a steward and a decade as a cook.

Ten years ago she took on her current duties as a clerk.

Although she grew up in Canberra, Mrs Ross moved to Queanbeyan 11 years ago with husband Heath - who is also a member of the RAAF- and had two children, Georgia, 11, Jack, 10.

A netball fanatic Sergeant Ross and her daughter both play netball regularly when she’s not overseas.

She said the hardest part of her deployment was being away from her family. She makes up for missing out on the day-to-day activities with regular Skype and phone calls.

‘‘The thing I miss most is my family and friends in Queanbeyan – the first thing I will do when I get home is give my kids a big hug,’’ she said.

‘‘But I am very lucky to have an amazing husband and two wonderful children who have just got on with it at home and allowed me to experience another part of the world.’’

Sergeant Ross is also looking forward to some upcoming leave when she will join her family for a holiday on their Kangaroo Island farm.

She will have plenty of stories from her deployment to share as well as a sense that she has made a difference in her time away from home.

‘‘We are making a difference, we are here keeping the peace between two countries and it is an important thing that we are doing here – every single job is playing a part,’’ she said.

‘‘I am doing something of significance to make my children proud of me.’’
