Help for sick boy

21 Nov, 2008 08:49 AM
SEVEN-year-old Queanbeyan boy Hini Tomokino enjoys playing soccer with his friends and riding his bike, and is very good at reading and spelling.

Hini does not like operations, but will face the second surgery in his short life next week when he travels to Sydney to get a tumour on his spine removed.

Cheryl Tomokino and her husband adopted Hini and his six-year-old brother Toni from family members in New Zealand about 14 months ago.

``When we first got him, Hini would scream with pain,'' Mrs Tomokino said.

``I took him to three doctors and they all said it was growing pains. The fourth doctor did an MRI and found a tumour wrapped around his spine.''

Last November Hini spent three weeks in Sydney Westmead Hospital having the 10cm tumour removed.

Mrs Tomokino thought Hini had made a full recovery until about three weeks ago when he woke up crying with pain in his legs.

``He had another MRI and they picked up another tumour,'' she said. ``Within the same week I was made redundant which made it even worse.''

Hini's second operation is scheduled at Westmead for November 26 and Mrs Tomokino is unable to resume fulltime work until well after the operation.

Many members of the community have heard about the family's plight, and have rallied together to raise funds.

A Cut Above hairdressing donated Wednesday's takings to the cause, raising $400 for the family.

The Queanbeyan Lions Club will hold a Country Music Day on Sunday at the Kangaroos Club to also raise money for Hini.

The day will feature 27 country music singers from Queanbeyan and around the region, including Alan and Ann Gunn, Owen Blundell, Ernie Constance, Jay Podger, Patty McKinnon and local artists Di Masters and Rod Flynn. Tickets are $10 at the door, with the fun kicking off at 11am. All money raised on the day will go into a Lions Club fund for Hini, to go towards expenses such as petrol, accommodation, food and some medical costs.

If Hini does not require further treatment he is then able to pass on the money to another needy child. Mrs Tomokino was overwhelmed with the amount of community support she had received. ``I'd like to thank the community very much, everyone has been so generous,'' she said.
