Flood warning downgraded

10 Feb, 2012 10:25 AM
Flood watch warnings for the Queanbeyan and Molonglo river valleys were cancelled this morning, although severe thunderstorms are still expected to hit this evening.

The Bureau of Meteorology downgraded Queanbeyan’s flood watch warning this morning, but senior meteorologist Sean Carson said flash flooding around town was still a possibility with heavy rain to come over the next 24 hours.

Parts of the South Coast including Moruya and Bega remain on flood watch.

Local SES volunteers have commenced preparations in the event of localised flooding, and urged locals not to drive or walk through floodwaters and to avoid swollen waterways.

Googong Dam is currently full to capacity and spilling over. ACTEW managing director Mark Sullivan said there was only limited scope to release water from the dam in preparation for heavy rain.

‘‘Googong Dam is a water supply dam, not a flood dam, and as Googong Dam has no gates once it is full there is very limited capacity to control flows through the dam.’’
