Conviction for having a taser

23 Oct, 2009 10:52 AM
A QUEANBEYAN man found in possession of a taser was sentenced to 100 hours community service in Queanbeyan Local Court on Monday.

Police executed a search warrant at the home of John Rupert Singh, 25, of Donald Road Queanbeyan, in March this year.

They found a purse which had been reported lost or stolen in Queanbeyan in September 2008, a taser device, and 0.2 grams of crystalline methyl amphetamine, or Ice.

Magistrate Brian Van Zuylen described the offences as very serious.

He said while Singh's criminal record was poor there were no previous charges of dishonesty.

He also took into account Singh's completion of the 12 week Magistrate's Early Referral Into Treatment (MERIT) Program.

Singh was fined $300 for possessing goods suspected as stolen, sentenced to 100 hours community service for possessing a prohibited weapon, and ordered to pay court costs.

Magistrate Van Zuylen convicted Singh of the possessed prohibited drug offence but imposed no penalty.
