MINISTER for Community Services Jenny Macklin oversaw the construction of the new Early Learning and Care Centre in Queanbeyan on Wednesday.
The Federal Government has invested about $1.7 million into the centre, which is anticipated to be completed by February next year.
It will create 48 new child care places once finished.
Ms Macklin said the government understood local families were facing pressure from the cost of living.
``That's why we are building a stronger economy to support jobs and delivering paid parental leave for families in four months' time,'' she said. ``And why we recently announced that families will be given the option to receive the 50 per cent Child Care Rebate payments fortnightly from July 1, 2011.''
Member for Eden-Monaro Mike Kelly said construction of the centre meant his 2007 election promises had come ``full circle''. ``This was the last piece of the puzzle so all of my [2007 promises] have been delivered,'' he said.
``I'm pretty pleased about that because I said I wouldn't stand again unless I did.''
He said the centre fits into what the government did to save the ABC Learning Centres in Queanbeyan and Jerrabomberra, and also support for private day care providers. ``The centre will help children make a smooth transition to school,'' Dr Kelly said.
